Random Thoughts - 24

More and more download the traditional “Mouth App,” where you apply your mouth to every event. Content is irrelevant.  Hollywood types and TV News commentators are big users.

Haunting you every day are the Done twins, Coulda and Shoulda.  They create regret and remorse, but are often resolved calling on their brother, Woulda.

It seems the Vatican’s true view of child sexual abuse by priests is that it’s a clerical fringe benefit. You know, room, board, and boys.  And now apparently,  nuns are on the menu.

There are those who pretend and those who pretend to pretend.  Such as to "greatness."

What does a college do when applicants have low standardized test scores (e.g. ACT, SAT)?  Eliminate the requirement.  Dress it up in high-minded reasons pertaining to diversity and economics, showing how open-minded you are. Welcome Creighton University in Nebraska, the latest joining a number of other colleges doing the same.  This follows many of the weaker graduate schools removing graduate versions of the same (e.g. GRE), also dressed in the clothing of lofty-sounding logic.

One point that will emerge is that randomly based uncertainty can be a driver for religious structure. Many groups facing uncertainty about their future are deeply religious or rely on faith as a source of comfort, resilience, and guidance. The intersection of uncertainty and religiosity often stems from the human need to find meaning, hope, and stability in the face of unpredictable or challenging circumstances. We first take up the connections of uncertainty to religion for the first real profession, farming, noting that hunting has many similar uncertainties. Below are groups that commonly lean on religious beliefs amidst uncertainty.   This short essay is a follow-up to a previous piece on certainty (https://used-ideas.blogspot.com/2024/12/certainty-is-also-emotion.html). Mediocrity

Once of the worst things that can happen to a young person is to be told their mediocre performance is good. For me, I was told the opposite, that my efforts would end me in failure. That was a spur that dug in deep. I would prove him wrong.  And I did.  Do not praise mediocrity, no matter how much it makes you feel good or your target.
