Too Much Pleasure Becomes Pain - and Other Comments

TOO MUCH PLEASURE ...  If AI (Artificial Intelligence) had been available only two centuries ago, it would have advised bloodletting as the treatment for fever.   Too much pleasure becomes pain.   Riddle: What is stronger than democracy, communism, kingship, and dictatorship? Answer: Corruption. Once begun, it reproduces. It’s forever.   If you never had the brain in the first place, no number of memory improvement pills will help.   Three types of risk: a. Risks you are willing to take, b. Risks you are not willing to take, and c. Risks you don’t know you’re taking.   The no-man’s land between science and theology is called philosophy. --- Bertrand Russell.   Every great philosopher takes a crack at defining truth . All have failed.   The two qualities of a successful theory are (A) It is predictive, and (B) It explains new phenomena.

Solving all Problems. Impossible? Yes.

Can We Ever Solve Every Problem? G Donald Allen Introduction. The fundamental problem of this section is to consider reasons why we have not yet reached the point in human evolution where we can solve all of our problems. This seems to have a popular origin in the Sherlock Holmes film, “Dressed to Kill [1] ,” where Dr. Watson, expresses the notion, “There is not a problem the mind can set that the mind cannot solve.” In the next section, we show quite the opposite. Some of the greatest of unsolvable problems are related to brain capacity, evolution, conceptuality, prediction, scale, vagueness, complexity, and more. These present roadblocks to problem-solving, and form the background for many almost unsolvable problems. There are multiple reasons, by no means the smallest class of them being the so-called impossible problems to be considered in another chapter. As well, we need to discuss further methodologies for solutions to come in the next chapter. Here are a few examples,

Hypertruth

What is Hypertruth?    You may never have heard of hypertruth, but it is part of your life. It is how you are swayed. Often, it how you believe. Opportunist see it as a tool; clergy see it as a sermon; politicians see it as more votes. Hypertruth is an excessive or exaggerated truth that can take an ordinary truth beyond its natural domain, even becoming false. As well, it may involve elevating or expanding a minor point into a major concept.   An example would be a cleric taking truths from the bible and reinterpreting and exaggerating them from statements of peace to those suggesting destruction and war. Centuries ago, the Inquisition followed the hypertruth of severe punishment to correct heresy.  The current notion of “Cancel Culture” mimic such notions for political heresy, the shunning practice of some religions. Also, the politician may take accepted truths of equality amongst people into an outright theft or reappropriation of resources from one party in favor of another. In

Lies and Boomerangs

Do lies boomerang? As a kid, you learned this well. When you were caught, there was big trouble like no allowance, no TV, no going out.   Yikes, the lie boomeranged.   But everybody knows lies are part and parcel of politics.   This brings up… The age-old story: The lies are told; the lies are believed; the lies are exposed. So, we come to the age-old question: If a lie boomerangs in a forest and nobody sees it, did it actually happen? Nope! Politicians like to position their lies a step ahead of boomerang exposure, i.e. beyond recompense. This is the classic lie playing it safe. It is one of the most curious, almost paradoxical, ways of telling the political truth.   In politics, the lie becomes truth if exposure is delayed .

The Sources of Truth

You may think you know about truth; you may already know a few. You may be interested in how they originate, from the voice of God or mankind. Is the Bible your source? Or Science? Or a trusted author? Let's look at the real sources. Some are solid, but others are vague. We have drafted up a collection of four sources,   knowable, provable, discoverable , and constructible.  The report is on LnkedIn . Personal Wisdom

The line between what is attainable and what isn’t is very thin.   Locating this line is but one step toward personal wisdom. Wisdom rescues truth from its failings. In the obscurity of personal darkness, many of us stumble into wisdom, changing us forever.

TRUTH-2020

The Truth about Truth – 2020 G. Donald Allen   December 31, 2020   Truth does not become more true by virtue of the fact that the entire world agrees with it, nor less so even if the whole world disagrees with it. [1] MAIMONIDES NOTE. This report has been updated, with additional explanation of quasi-truth.  See, this update at this link .      What is Truth has to be one of the big questions of life? Look it up.    Use Google or consult any of the countless volumes on truth.   Truth is one of the biggest subjects in all of philosophy, religion, the law, and science.   It is one of the most important words in any language one can apply to a given statement.   The word “truth”   confers understanding, authority, and consensus.   Truth is a power word; probably none are stronger.  Get a colleague to agree with your truth, not the logic or righteousness of your case, and you have a follower. It is the word.   This implies its meaning must be addressed. It is used by all in
