Letter to the Graduate

Here is a letter written to my nephew on his high school graduation.

Congratulations on your achievement.  You are awarded a certificate for a mission well accomplished.  This is your day to celebrate.  The real celebration is that you have now jumped up one rung on the long, difficult ladder of life.

Yet, your life so far and to come will be a bounty of achievements. Celebrate, enjoy, and remember these. This is important.   Life will also deliver to you an assortment of failures, some from bad luck and others from bad judgment.  Learn the difference.  Learn from these, but do not allow them to dominate your pathway.  Too many do so, causing their gradual defeat in the game of living.

Your memory is most important; after years it becomes what you are.  It is your stamp of uniqueness.  It is a personal warehouse of you - your experiences, your expertise, your achievements, your loves, and so much of everything you will have become. Cherish your memory, but control it because it can be an errant and often irrational partner.  Please do not let it gush up on you with past failures, dwelling on shortcomings.  Don’t let it pester you with reasons why you can’t.  Try to forget transgressions. Stay positive always!

Work hard with deliberate speed and intelligence.  Keep high your moral principles.  Stay honest though you may see deceit succeed.  Stay faithful, though you may see expedience get ahead. Stay truthful, though lies seem to work for others.   I know you will.

Your family is an extraordinary bit of luck for you. Not many are so blessed. Through your dad, uncle, and grandfather you have great role models, the best. As well, your mom, aunt, and grandmother are fantastic models of compassion and love.

Behavioral Science and Problem-Solving

I.                                       I.                 Introduction.                Concerning our general behavior, it’s high about time we all had some understanding of how we operate on ourselves, and it is just as important how we are operated on by others. This is the wheelhouse of behavioral sciences. It is a vast subject. It touches our lives constantly. It’s influence is pervasive and can be so subtle we never notice it. Behavioral sciences profoundly affect our ability and success at problem-solving, from the elementary level to highly complex wicked problems. This is discussed in Section IV. We begin with the basics of behavioral sciences, Section II, and then through the lens of multiple categories and examples, Section III. II.     ...

Where is AI (Artificial Intelligence) Going?

How to view Artificial Intelligence (AI).  Imagine you go to the store to buy a TV, but all they have are 1950s models, black and white, circular screens, picture rolls, and picture imperfect, no remote. You’d say no thanks. Back in the day, they sold wildly. The TV was a must-have for everyone with $250 to spend* (about $3000 today). Compared to where AI is today, this is more or less where TVs were 70 years ago. In only a few decades AI will be advanced beyond comprehension, just like TVs today are from the 50s viewpoint. Just like we could not imagine where the video concept was going back then, we cannot really imagine where AI is going. Buckle up. But it will be spectacular.    *Back then minimum wage was $0.75/hr. Thus, a TV cost more than eight weeks' wages. -------------------------

THE ORIGINS OF IMPOSSIBLE PROBLEMS

The Origins of Impossible Problems Introduction. Impossible problems have always been a part of the landscape of human thought. They arise from various sources, often rooted in cognitive, logical, or structural limitations. Some problems are truly unsolvable due to fundamental constraints, while others only appear impossible because of human limitations in understanding, reasoning, or approach. In many situations, we make difficult problems impossible because of our limitations, psychological and otherwise. It is a curious thought problem to consider what sort of limitations AI will reveal when we give it truly difficult problems to solve. We must hope that we humans have not transferred our complete reliance and dependence to machine-learning tools beforehand. Below are key sources of seemingly impossible problems, along with examples and a few references to philosophical and scientific thought. Impossible Problems . To explore impossible problems, we must consider our systems fo...
